"Pork chops, breakfast links -- sold out," Cheryl Ouellette, the Summit pig farmer, told me Saturday at the Proctor Farmers Market in Tacoma. "We're selling like crazy. Everything's fine."

I'd just finished reading a farmer's take on an egg shortage and "eggonomic downturn" on Vashon Island when this news release landed in my in-box: "WSU Puyallup Extension & the Pierce Conservation District are offering 'Chicken Management 101: Small-Scale Egg Production.' The course is designed for home egg producers but is also applicable to small-scale farmers looking to start producing eggs. The course will cost $20 per family to cover printing costs."

I spent two hours this morning at Tacoma Public Libray's downtown Main Library in a meeting room with about 30 local food activists, educators, farmers and policy people talking about a book -- Barbara Kingsolver's acclaimed "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life" -- and how our community can create programs and events that bring people together around the food we eat, share and, hopefully, grow.
