While other restaurants may feel the economic urge to cut back or close down, Asado is going for more. The Argentine-accented restaurant, which has been a smoking-hot anchor of Tacoma's Sixth Avenue dinner scene since opening in 2006, opens for lunch today. Read more

The Ark sets sails and I dig in

A first bite of the Tideflats smokehouse restaurant

It's been a lot longer than 40 days and 40 nights since The Ark first planned to open in December. The restaurant officially opened on Monday, resurrecting the wreckage that was The Olde Shipwreck roadhouse on Tacoma's Tideflats. I got my first bite of The Ark on Tuesday. I had one order of ribs and one order of chicken. Based on my first bite of golden chicken and sweet pork ribs, I'm inclined to order two of everything when I return. Read more

A small-plates menu isn't the only new thing at Maxwell's Speakeasy + Lounge. There's a smaller payroll, too: front-of-the-house man Rich Troiani left Maxwell's this week. No word yet on his replacement, but executive chef Matt Colony told me today that he's picking up some of Troiani's administrative duties.  Read more

Tale of three burgers: Flip-N-Out, In-N-Out, Sonic

A first bite of a new Tacoma burger, plus a sip of Sonic's drinks

The first thing I did when I landed in Sacramento last week was revisit one of my favorite hamburger haunts: In-N-Out, the California-based drive-in chain that's yet to migrate to the Northwest. The timing was deliciously ironic as I chowed down on a Double-Double on the same day that a burger joint with a doppleganging name and logo opened in Tacoma.

While the parking lot was deliciously smoky, the skies west of Olympia today were far sunnier than they were on the morning of Dec. 12, 2007 as Ranch House BBQ and Steakhouse re-opened in its original location 14 months after a mudslide destroyed the restaurant's dining room. Read more

I drove a little north of the South Sound border to Normandy Park, south of Sea-Tac, tonight for a taste of handcrafted, stone-baked pizza a Cafe Mia, a soon-to-open pizza-pasta-sandwich restaurant overseen by Troy Christian and Sean Quinn, the Tacoma team that opened Maxwell's Speakeasy + Pub early last year and established Asado in 2005. I've spent voraciously at Nordstrom lately. Robert Graham shirts: Delicious. Bruno Magli boots: Like buttah. Hanae Mori eau de parfum: Dang, I smell better than bacon! So I figured it was time to drop into Nordy's new Tacoma Mall Cafe Bistro and drop money on food. Read more
