First you should read Soren Andersen's review of "Food, Inc.," a South Sound Eats exclusive. Then you should attend Sunday's 7 p.m. screening at The Grand Cinema in Tacoma. Afterward, I'll lead a discussion of the documentary that probes the ugly side of industrial food production in America. To sweeten the deal, I'll serve vegan and gluten-free sweets from Corina Bakery. The weeklong engagement of "Food, Inc." is a fund-raiser for the Tacoma Food Coop: $1 from every ticket sold will go the budding grocery store effort.

The new year will bring new costs to Pierce County restaurants that rack up critical violations on their health inspections. Starting Friday, restaurants that get dinged with 35 or more points worth of critical violations will be required to pay $160 for any re-inspection. The fees, which some restaurateurs argue amount to de facto fines, follow a change in policy adopted by the county's Food Advisory Board this fall.
