Sea Grill opened in the summer of 2005, on a crest of investment and hopes that a vibrant culinary scene was cooking in downtown Tacoma. I dined at Sea Grill the first night. I remember a lively room, filled with excited diners, fresh seafood and crisp service. Read more

Cascade Bagel shuts downtown shop

Owner cites 'tremendous loss of revenue' and lack of signage

While Sea Grill grabbed the going-of-business attention, downtown Tacoma's Cascade Bagel quietly closed for good on Wednesday, a victim of what owner Bob Bringer said was "tremendous loss of revenue" precipitated, in part, by the inability to place signage for his business on the state-owned building adjacent to the Washington State History Museum on Pacific Avenue.  Read more

Sea Grill closing Sunday

Sea Grill, the downtown Tacoma restaurant owned by Seattle-based Mackay Restaurant Group, will close its doors after dinner service on Sunday. Sea Grill chef Matt Brandsey today confirmed what I've heard in the wind this week.

If I overlooked it earlier (since it's been on the market since December, I've learned), I blame it on all the candy-and-stars window paintings that clutter the windows of Herban Cafe, the Sixth Avenue restaurant that is for sale, according two signs I spotted in the windows today: a small one from owners Steve and Gretchen Nogler confirming the sale and a big one from a real estate company advertising the sale. It's hard to imagine things getting any freakier at 926 Pacific Ave., the downtown Tacoma address that once housed a Mexican restaurant cum gender-bending drag revue. But they did. It's a tale of cockroaches, broken equipment, a gas leak, a court order and a hostile take-over. Somewhere in the story, Stephanie's Gospel & Jazz opened, closed, re-opened with a new menu and new operators, closed and re-opened with the original menu and the original operators. Read more
