Meet me at The Grand for a Food, Inc. conversation on Sunday

I'll lead a post-movie discussion on Suday

First you should read Soren Andersen's review of "Food, Inc.," a South Sound Eats exclusive. Then you should attend Sunday's 7 p.m. screening at The Grand Cinema in Tacoma. Afterward, I'll lead a discussion of the documentary that probes the ugly side of industrial food production in America. To sweeten the deal, I'll serve vegan and gluten-free sweets from Corina Bakery. The weeklong engagement of "Food, Inc." is a fund-raiser for the Tacoma Food Coop: $1 from every ticket sold will go the budding grocery store effort.

While Sea Grill grabbed the going-of-business attention, downtown Tacoma's Cascade Bagel quietly closed for good on Wednesday, a victim of what owner Bob Bringer said was "tremendous loss of revenue" precipitated, in part, by the inability to place signage for his business on the state-owned building adjacent to the Washington State History Museum on Pacific Avenue.  Read more

Ten feet below the front door of The Seven-Oh-One, in the subterranean womb of that Pacific Avenue address, the cobwebby chill of yesteryear vise-gripped me. The first thing I did when I landed in Sacramento last week was revisit one of my favorite hamburger haunts: In-N-Out, the California-based drive-in chain that's yet to migrate to the Northwest. The timing was deliciously ironic as I chowed down on a Double-Double on the same day that a burger joint with a doppleganging name and logo opened in Tacoma.

Even better than burritos or pizza, fried chicken is the perfect kind of food: You can eat it hot or you can eat it cold. You can eat it out of your hands, or you can be fancy about it and use a knife and fork. And if you don't mind a greasy steering wheel, you can eat fried chicken while driving, like I often do after I pop into supermarkets for mid-day fried chicken snacks.
