Party with Ugni Blanc
Another desperate attempt to get you to drink white

Okay kids, I am back on my white wine rant. Recently a friend celebrated her 40th birthday party and wanted to celebrate with all things French – French wine, French cheese, French film, etc. This was my opportunity to bring a white wine to a party where I knew reds would dominate the scene, and some (dare I say), weren’t even French! Sacre bleu!
The only this missing from this shindig was a video of “Better Off Dead”. If you don’t know what I am talking about, I am sad for you. Rent it. Back to the task at hand…
One of my favorite white wines is Domaine De Pouy Cotes De Gascogne from the southwest of France, about two hours south of Bordeaux. This wine has a penetrating floral green apple fragrance, and is loaded with refreshingly crisp and flavorful fruit.
Even since the Vin Grotto Wine Bar days, Domaine de Pouy has consistently been one of my true value wines, and above all – is simply delicious! At 60% Ugni Blanc (this is Trebbiano in Italy) and 40% Colombard this lovely juice has a myriad of pairing possibilities that include fatty cheese, seafood and tart salads.
You can find this delightful sipper at Stadium Thriftway and Metropolitan Market for about $11 a bottle. Pick one up and let me know what you think.

I think people believe all whites to be the bland or over sweet stuff that was predominate in the past. There are so many styles out there and one just has to taste with an open mind. Listen to Kris. She knows.

See? I am not crazy! I won't stop until devout red drinkers learn to appreciate the beauty of a great white wine. Today I tried a white Burgundy from Macon-Solutre (Domaine Des Gerbeaux) to die for. The journey continues. Very proud of you Vince...--The Domaine de Pouy was divine, and I'm usually a red whore. (ew, sounded bad, didn't it.) What I mean by that is, given my druthers, I'll usually choose red, but the thing I've been noticing since last summer (the summer before?) when I had a thing called Seven? maybe? and another silly-named Aussie thing (also a blend) --Mimsy, I think? at the Rosewood, is that certain whites have a kind of fresh impertinence that thumbs its nose at reds and then out-does them with aroma, sweet+tart+fruit, and a lasting intrigue, and that has been kind of winning me to the side of the whites.... I suspect, with wine, there's a sort of hierarchy, where you start with the sweet Gewurtzrtramiener or Riesling, and then work to the White ZIn, get to Merlot and then Aussie Shiraz, and soon you're going, mm, red blend, mm, Cab, and all things white make you scoff... And then you turn 40 and realize pretense is just goofy, and things like Domaine de Pouy really do rock the wine planet...

Your description of the Pouy with the crisp fruit fragrance and flavor suggests that you should stop by our winery just north of Olympia and taste our dry Gewurztraminer. It has a flavor and aroma profile that sounds like the Pouy, except the dominant fruit is grapefruit. It is superb with Thai red curry soup and other highly flavored foods.
