There's wine in my hair salon

As we all know, times are tough, so the smart businessperson must think outside the box to make a buck. The stylists of Azarra Salon are no exception. They now include “wine” in their business name. As of last week, the NEW salon is now Azarra Salon and Wine.
Why wine and beauty, you ask? According to Aura Mae, owner, stylist, author (Get Some Hairapy) and wine lover, “We are in touch with the needs of our customer and know most of them enjoy wine. Our clients turn to us for advice on many levels. They trust us. Why wouldn’t they trust us for their wine? And with our newly expanded space, we now have room to offer this service.”
Azarra Salon started their beautification services in 1991 on the corner of 6th and Proctor. In 2004, they decided to go more urban and moved to The Harmon building, just above the brewery. Up until recently, the space they occupied was one big cramped room shared by four stylists. Two weeks ago, they moved into a larger space with five separate rooms and a great view of Pacific Avenue.
Great new space for sure, but there is one very special feature. “Some salons boast a Vichy shower. We have a bar.” Says Mae. “We cannot serve our clients a glass of wine at this time, but if we meet a certain level of wine sales, we should be able to have wine tastings in the future.”
Azarra salon is no stranger to the hospitality business. In the 80s stylist Carrie Martin’s brother Randy Martin was the food and beverage manager at the Sheraton Hotel, which is now the Hotel Murano. Another brother Gary Martin was co-owner of the downtown restaurant Ravenous where Carrie was also a server. Now it’s her turn to make a mark in this business along with Aura Mae.
Azarra’s wine selection plans to be eclectic. “In keeping with out salon’s irreverent philosophy, we plan to offer items that are unique and cannot be found just anywhere. We plan to offer wines from all over the world and some from our own backyard. These wines will be easy on the wallet as well as your pallet. This won’t be the place to find your big, serious wines.” Mae says with a smile.
Azarra should have wines to sell within the next week or two. I will let you know when they will be available for purchase, or check the website at www.azarra.com for more information. Stop in for a visit soon and perhaps you will walk away with a new cut or glorious hair color, like a purple Syrah or red Merlot. They can do that. I’m living proof!
